The town of Darien is one of the most affluent towns in the county, and part of Connecticut’s Gold Coast. Our town was rated one of the best places to live in America by CNN in 2005., and is also known for its attention to education and its outstanding public school system Even the Darien Library has consistently been ranked in HAPLR (Hennen's American Public Library Ratings) as being in the top ten in its category. An intelligent community, we can always tell if someone is not from the area by the way they pronounce the town’s name. Let me clarify for you. Pronounce the name like "Mary Ann," and stress the last syllable.

The town has an interesting history. Records indicate that the first settlers were from the New Haven and Wethersfield colonies and from Norwalk around 1641. Sometime in the 1740’s the community got its first church, built from the Middlesex Society of the Town of Stamford, now known as The First Congregational Church of Darien located right on the Post Road. Known as Middlesex Parish in 1737, it was incorporated as The Town of Darien in 1820. The story goes that a few of the towns prominent families wanted to name the town after themselves, and couldn't decide on a final name. Finally, after a sailor went to Darien, Colombia and suggested that name, Darien was finally incorporated.
In addition to some of the very nice small neighborhoods, make sure you take a tour of the Noroton , Noroton Heights , and the Tokeneke areas of Darien, as well as Springdale.
Yachting enthusiasts have certainly heard of the Noroton Yacht Club, which was founded in 1928 and runs the largest junior sailing program in the county. Two America's Cup skippers are former members of this famous club. The 37 acre Ox Ridge Hunt Club founded in 1911, hosts a popular annual Charity Horse Show each June, and started the tradition in 1926. The free three day event has drawn as many as 16,000 visitors and 1,300 equestrians,.
A few private clubs of distinction include the Wee Burn Country Club. Originally formed in 1895, it was the first golf club in the state and one of the first in the nation, and the Woodway Country Club , which was opened in 1918 which also includes land in Stamford.
Transportation accessibility includes I-95, with rest stops both northbound and southbound. Metro North services Darien and Noroton Heights . Although the town has an up and coming downtown, residents often shop at neighboring cities for larger items. For recreation, the town has two yacht clubs, a hunt club, four country clubs and number of small parks, Weeds Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach are local favorites.
