The town has an interesting history. Records indicate that the first settlers were from the New Haven and Wethersfield colonies and from Norwalk around  1641. Sometime in the 1740’s  the community got its first church, built from the Middlesex Society of the Town of Stamford,  now known as The First Congregational Church of Darien located right on the Post Road. Known as Middlesex Parish in 1737, it was incorporated as The Town of Darien in 1820. The story goes that a few of the towns prominent families wanted to name the town after themselves, and couldn't decide on a final name. Finally,  after a sailor went to Darien, Colombia  and suggested that name, Darien was finally incorporated.

In addition to some of the very nice small neighborhoods, make sure  you take a tour of the Noroton , Noroton Heights , and the  Tokeneke areas of Darien, as well as Springdale.

Yachting enthusiasts have certainly heard of the Noroton Yacht Club, which was founded in 1928  and  runs the largest junior sailing program in the county. Two America's Cup skippers are former members of this famous club. The 37 acre  Ox Ridge Hunt Club founded in 1911, hosts a popular annual Charity Horse Show each June, and started the tradition in  1926. The  free three day event has drawn as many as  16,000 visitors and 1,300 equestrians,.

A few  private clubs of distinction include the Wee Burn Country Club. Originally  formed in 1895, it was the first  golf club in the state and one of the first in the nation, and the  Woodway Country Club , which was opened in 1918 which also includes land in Stamford.

Transportation   accessibility includes I-95, with rest stops both northbound and southbound. Metro North services  Darien and Noroton Heights .  Although the town  has an up and coming  downtown, residents often shop  at neighboring cities for larger items.  For recreation, the town has two yacht clubs, a hunt club, four country clubs and  number of small parks, Weeds Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach are local favorites.
